Ms Waggener’s involvement with Pro Kids | First Tee began in 1996. “I visited the original site at Colina Park, a lovely 18 hole executive course, and saw how this oasis in the city was nurturing and motivating kids to achieve greater things in life, using golf as ‘the hook’ and education as the ‘payoff’,” Sue recalls. “It is a very unique opportunity for our at-risk youth, and deserves our support.” Sue and her husband, Steve McCracken, later helped make the opening of Pro Kids/First Tee’s second facility in Oceanside a reality.
Sue organized the first ‘Home and Home’ golf event for the girls of Pro Kids | First Tee at Del Mar Country Club, and the Club’s Women’s Golf Association has continued to host it for10 years. Girls from both the Colina Heights and Oceanside campuses look forward to the time they spend with the ladies of Del Mar CC. “Once you meet the kids you realize that they are learning much more than just golf. They’re wonderful kids – funny, poised and smart. And some pretty good golfers too,” she notes.
Sue was a successful real estate attorney in Orange County, moved to San Diego in 1995, joined Del Mar Country Club, and learned how to play golf. She has enjoyed the game ever since, playing at many women’s team events and other golf tournaments. “Spending time on the golf course with the other ladies from all over San Diego is terrific,” Sue reminds us. “The Carini Women’s Golf Tournament is an especially fun tournament because of the unusual format. For example, on one hole you play with frisbees and on another you tee off with your putter. You play with a Pro Kid girl and it’s fun regardless of your handicap.”
